Can activity while burning a DVD cause errors?
06.January, 2009
I used to have a horrible CD burner, and I got the idea in my head that if I had anything else open or was doing something on the computer while the CD was burning that it could screw it up.
Chances are, that it was just luck of the draw, since about 25% of my CDs failed.
However, I want to know if there is anything to this. Besides slowing down the burning process, can browsing the internet or scanning with an anti-virus cause a DVD burn to fail?
It really shouldn't, that is sort of the point of digital vs analogue media is that digital should create a perfect copy regardless of the other things going on with your system, but I mean I guess there is always a chance.

The internet won't hurt it. Scanning for viruses may hurt it if it scans the file you are burning. Otherwise it's just sort of a crap shoot. My only suggestion is to use DVD RW drives and discs.

Highly unlikely that other programs will affect the burning.
Bet to get the best results you need to burn at the slowest speed usable like 1x or 2x to insure the integrity of the disc remains
Think if it as if you're a painter with a paint brush. If you brush very quickly across you're likely to have missing pieces that don't have paint. But if you brush slowly you'll be sure to get every little piece.

Theoretically speaking it won't. Practically speaking, unless and until you have computer with great specs (even a Core 2 Duo + 1 GB RAM), it shouldn't be a problem.
Yes, to avoid having screw ups in CD burning the make of the CD makes a HUGE difference. If you've got some unknown brand, the chances of failure are more likely than branded ones like "Imation" and "Sony"
